Otago

The Otago Exercise Program (OEP) is an evidence-based strength, balance, and exercise program to help older adults reduce falls. It consists of 17 strength and balance exercises and a walking program, performed three times a week in the home, outpatient, or community setting.

OEP was developed in New Zealand and endorsed by the US Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It is used by physical therapists worldwide. Four random control trials demonstrated fall reductions of 35 – 45% in older adults. OEP was most effective for adults 80 years of age or older, who have fallen within the last year, and who have moderate to severe decreased strength and balance due to multiple risk factors including arthritis and inactivity.

The Otago exercises in Aspire Balance are a curated selection from the Otago Exercise Program to help improve foundational strength and balance.
